Smart Salting Site Maintenance Resources
Road salt is an important part of ensuring safety during winter months. But it also has harmful effects on the environment. When chloride from road salt or other deicers is transmitted into our waterways it threatens drinking water supplies, as well as the health of freshwater fish and other aquatic life. It takes only one teaspoon of salt to permanently pollute five gallons, and once chloride is in the water, there is no easy way to remove it.

Sustainable Snow Removal: Protecting Water and Wallets
As part of efforts to reduce chloride pollution in our waterways, the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments (TMACOG) and the University of Toledo hosted a virtual info session detailing how small changes can improve snow removal operations, save money, and protect our waterways. A recording of this event can be found below.
This event included a background review on the issue of chloride in our waterways and a review of practical tips for salt storage, salt application, and staff training. The resources discussed can be found below.
